The death toll from the second day of unrest at the Negombo prison this morning has risen to 25. Nearly 100 people have been injured in the clash.
It is reported that 20 inmates and 05 prison guards are among the dead in the clashes.
Last Sunday, clashes broke out between remand and convicted prisoners, resulting in the death of two inmates and the injury of 38 others.
Today, unrest broke out again, and the government deployed the army to control the situation after the police opened fire to control the clash between inmates and prison officers.
Police say that initial police investigations have revealed that the violent clash between two groups of inmates inside the prison began due to a dispute over a drug trafficking operation taking place inside the prison.
However, our sources, who do not wish to be identified, have stated that there is information that there was some conspiracy behind this clash. The sources further state that these conspiracy plans will be revealed in the future.
