Who is responsible for your data

Lanka Update is published by Sunil Gamini Jayalathge, based in France. Because the publisher is established in the European Union, this site is subject to the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

What we collect

You do not need an account to read Lanka Update, and we do not run a newsletter or a comment system. We do not ask you for your name, address or payment details.

The data processed when you visit the site is:

  • Technical request data — IP address, browser and operating system, the pages you request, referring page and timestamps. Our hosting provider records this to serve pages and to detect abuse.
  • Analytics data — aggregated statistics about which articles are read, via Google Analytics.
  • Advertising data — collected by Google and its advertising partners to select and measure the ads you see, as described below.

Cookies and similar technologies

Lanka Update itself does not set cookies for tracking or personalisation. Cookies on this site come from the two Google services we use: Google Analytics and Google AdSense.

Google AdSense and third-party advertising

This site is monetised with Google AdSense. In connection with that:

  • Third-party vendors, including Google, use cookies to serve ads based on your prior visits to this and other websites.

We use it in aggregate only — we do not try to identify individual readers, and we do not combine analytics data with any other source.

Legal bases for processing

How long data is kept

  • Server access logs: up to 12 months.
  • Google Analytics data: according to the retention period configured in Google Analytics, at most 14 months.
  • Advertising data: controlled by Google and its partners under their own retention policies.
  • Emails you send us: kept as long as needed to deal with your message, and any legal record-keeping obligation.

Data transfers outside the EU

Google Analytics and Google AdSense are operated by Google, which processes data in the United States and other countries. Those transfers rely on the safeguards Google puts in place, including the EU standard contractual clauses and the EU–US Data Privacy Framework.

Your rights

Under the GDPR you have the right to access the personal data we hold about you, to have it corrected or erased, to restrict or object to its processing, and to receive it in a portable form. You also have the right to withdraw consent at any time.

To exercise any of these rights, email jayalathges1@gmail.com. We answer within one month. If you are not satisfied with our response, you may complain to your national data protection authority — in France, the CNIL.

For data held by Google as an independent controller — advertising and analytics data — you can also exercise your rights directly with Google through your Google Account.

Children

Lanka Update is a general news site written for adults. We do not knowingly collect personal data from children under 16. If you believe a child has provided us with personal data, write to us and we will delete it.

External links

Our articles link to other websites. Once you follow such a link, this policy no longer applies — the site you land on has its own. We are not responsible for their content or their handling of your data.

Changes to this policy

We update this policy when the site or the services it relies on change. The date at the top always reflects the current version. Material changes will be announced on the site.
